After decades in the political wilderness, no one can be in any doubt that racism is well and truly back. However, it seems that there are some supporters it can do without, and it has issued a rare public statement in an effort to distance itself from one in particular.
“Over the last few years I feel that I’ve made tremendous progress,” said Racism from its home in America.”I’ve got everyone calling me ‘populism’ instead. Which, you know, makes it okay. Also, I’ve been legitimised by numerous politicians and public figures, and Brexit was obviously a very big win for me. But then, Donald bloody Trump goes and puts his big ugly foot in it again and the next thing you know I’m back to square one.”
Racism’s statement follows the US President’s retweeting of a supporter yelling “White power!” several times. It’s the latest in a string of racial rows Trump has incited, such as when he described neo-Nazi protestors as “very fine people”, or when he attacked four Democratic congresswomen, telling them to go back to where they came from, despite three of them being born within the United States. There was also his infamous so-called “Muslim ban”.
But with this latest tweet many feel that he may finally have gone too far. It has been almost universally condemned, even by his own supporters.
“Frankly, I can do without the likes of him tarnishing my good name,” Racism continued. “It’s taken me bloody years to get where I am today, and I’m not going to let one lousy tweet from some angry orange gobshite ruin it for me. Frankly, I wish that he would just bugger off and leave racism to the experts. After all, I have my reputation to consider.”
